Olympic park bomb scare is false alarmAugust 2, 1996 ATLANTA (CNN) -- A bomb scare forced police to begin evacuating a portion of Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park Friday night, a week after a bomb jolted the park. Police found a "suspicious" package at a nearby street corner but quickly realized it was harmless. Revelers who left the park were allowed to return about 11 p.m. EDT, an hour after the package was discovered. Bomb experts were called in immediately and a portion of the park was cleared as a safety measure, said a spokesperson with the Atlanta Police Department. The spokesperson would not comment on what type of package was found. The park was packed Friday with people celebrating the last weekend of the Centennial Olympic Games. Early last Saturday, a bomb went off in the park, killing one person and injuring 111 others. In addition, a Turkish journalist, rushing to the scene, died of a heart attack.
