WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Airline passengers would be flagged by a
computer-profile system as potential terrorists under a
proposal reportedly under review by an aviation safety panel.
The goal is to identify passengers whose baggage should be
scanned by high-tech equipment that is considered too
expensive and time-consuming to use on every piece of
luggage, Saturday's Washington Post reported.
Computer profiles of passengers would be created with
information such as bill-paying records and flying habits so
officials could decide which baggage to check.
The paper quoted an adviser to Vice President Al Gore, who
heads a presidential commission established after July's
fatal explosion of TWA Flight 800. The panel is to report to
President Clinton September 9 about plans for a national
explosives detection system.
Titanic expedition got relics -- just not the hull
BOSTON (CNN) -- A failed attempt to raise a large chunk of
the Titanic still has some things to show for its $5 million
salvage effort.
Organizers retrieved numerous artifacts from the ocean
bottom, ranging from beer bottles to telegraph equipment.
They planned to display some of their treasures Sunday at
news conferences in Boston and New York.
The expedition ended Friday after lines used to lift a 21-ton
piece of the ocean liner's hull snapped. There will be no
other attempts this year. The "unsinkable" Titanic sank in
1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from
England to New York. At the time, it was the world's biggest
ocean liner.
