September 4, 1996 Court upholds student fee covering abortion
SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- Using part of a University of California student fee for health insurance that covers abortions does not violate the religious freedom of students who oppose the procedure, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. The insurance program is not mandatory and does not force objectors to accept or advocate abortion services, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said. The ruling upholds an earlier decision in a 1992 lawsuit filed by Gregory Goehring, who was expelled from the University of California at Davis for refusing to pay the fee. The insurance program covers abortion counseling at the campus health center and abortions performed off-campus. The Associated Press contributed to this report. LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- The judge presiding over the O.J. Simpson wrongful death civil suit warned attorneys on both sides Tuesday to not "waste my time" with frivolous motions and extraneous witnesses. Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki's comments come on the day both sides filed papers listing witness and exhibit lists for the upcoming trial. Separately Tuesday, Simpson continued giving his deposition in the case, which is set for trial on September 17. The families of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, are seeking financial damages to compensate for the loss of their loved ones. Related stories:
