LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Allegations that the CIA sold crack cocaine in south central Los Angeles to fund the Nicaraguan Contras were the topic of discussion at a hearing conducted by the House Select Committee on Intelligence Saturday.

Community leaders and law enforcement officials got a chance to tell members of Congress and the Justice Department their opinions on the allegations. The hearing was held in Compton and is part of a government probe, prompted by a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News.

CIA Director John Deutch has refuted the charges. The Contras were right-wing guerrillas based outside Nicaragua and supported by the United States in their fight against the Sandinistas. The two groups agreed to a cease-fire in 1990.
