Community leaders and law enforcement officials got a chance to tell members of Congress and the Justice Department their opinions on the allegations. The hearing was held in Compton and is part of a government probe, prompted by a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News. CIA Director John Deutch has refuted the charges. The Contras were right-wing guerrillas based outside Nicaragua and supported by the United States in their fight against the Sandinistas. The two groups agreed to a cease-fire in 1990.
