Olympic bomb chronologyOctober 26, 1996Web posted at: 8:40 p.m. EDT ATLANTA (AP) -- Developments in the bombing at Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park: July 27 -- A pipe bomb explodes at 1:20 a.m., killing Alice Hawthorne of Albany, Ga., and injuring 111 others. A Turkish cameraman rushing to the scene dies of a heart attack. Richard Jewell, a security guard working in the park, alerts police to a suspicious knapsack and helps evacuate people moments before it explodes. July 28-29 -- Jewell hailed as a hero, gives numerous interviews. July 30 -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution identifies Jewell as the prime suspect. July 31-August 1 -- FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents search Jewell's Atlanta apartment, a cabin in northeast Georgia where he used to live and a storage shed behind the cabin. August 2 -- Agents search a building and security office at Piedmont College in Demorest, 80 miles northeast of Atlanta, where Jewell had worked as a security guard. August 3 -- FBI agents take hair samples and fingerprints from Jewell. August 6 -- Jewell spends the day meeting with his lawyers. FBI agents search the laundry room and manager's office in Jewell's apartment complex. August 26 -- Jewell's mother appeals to President Clinton to clear her son. August 29 -- Attorney General Janet Reno says she sympathizes with Jewell's mother but refuses to comment on his status as a suspect. September 22 -- In an interview on "60 Minutes," Jewell says: "They don't have anything to arrest me on, and they never will, because I did not do it." October 23 -- Federal judge orders the FBI to make public within five days the affidavits used to obtain search warrants of Jewell's property, describing him as "former suspect." October 26 -- Federal prosecutors say Jewell is no longer a suspect.
