Plucking harps from Chicago
February 10, 1997 CHICAGO (CNN) -- Not to harp on the obvious, but making harps is an art form. And it's not lost on the old-world artisans at Lyon and Healy harp makers. George Lyon and Patrick Healy started making harps in the Midwest back in 1864 because instruments imported from Europe wouldn't stand up to the climate. Now, you can find Lyon and Healy harps in symphonies everywhere. The company, together with a sister factory in Italy, make 70 percent of the world's harps. The company finds and trains all its carvers, gilders and master harp makers, who make the instruments from scratch. Their handiwork can costs as much as $28,000.
