The heroine's a rat in Easter bunny tale
March 29, 1997 (CNN) -- Rats are not the most endearing creatures, but a group of abandoned rabbits has grown quite fond of one of the rodents. This spring tale of unlikely nurturing stems from a mulch pile near Granite City, Missouri. That's where a group of young orphaned rabbits was found recently by an animal lover. Motherly rat adopts baby bunnies She took them to her brother's pet shop, and Steve Cardwell put the rabbits in a cage with a female rat. The rodent's maternal instinct kicked in, and she began to feed and clean the rabbits. Thanks to the rat's care, the prognosis for the bunnies -- at Easter, no less -- looks good.
