(CNN) -- Rats are not the most endearing creatures, but a group of abandoned rabbits has grown quite fond of one of the rodents.

This spring tale of unlikely nurturing stems from a mulch pile near Granite City, Missouri. That's where a group of young orphaned rabbits was found recently by an animal lover.

She took them to her brother's pet shop, and Steve Cardwell put the rabbits in a cage with a female rat. The rodent's maternal instinct kicked in, and she began to feed and clean the rabbits.

Thanks to the rat's care, the prognosis for the bunnies -- at Easter, no less -- looks good.
