A closer look at airline safety
In an effort to add context and depth to major news stories, CNN Interactive has created Data Points, detailed analysis based on computer-assisted reporting.
Stories and statistics are developed by examining government databases and other online resources.
For the ValuJet accident, we culled three sources of information: the U.S. Department of Transportation's Hazardous Materials Accident Incident Reporting database; the U.S. Census Bureau's Vital Statistics; and the National Transportation Safety Board's Web site.
Among our findings:
- There have been thousands of accidents involving hazardous cargo on board U.S. aircraft
- 1996 was one of the worst years in more than a decade for fatal airline accidents
- Air travel is still among the safest means of transportation in the U.S.
