DENVER (CNN) -- The federal government has until July 23 to respond to Timothy McVeigh's motion for a new trial for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the trial judge has ruled.
U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch made his ruling Tuesday, a day after McVeigh's attorneys filed the motion.
The defense said publicity over newspaper reports of a McVeigh confession, Matsch's refusal to grant a delay in the trial after publication of those reports and the way he instructed potential jurors made it impossible for McVeigh to receive a fair trial.
In June, a jury of seven men and five women sentenced McVeigh to die for his role in the bombing that killed 168 people.
