MIAMI (CNN) -- As police continue their intensive hunt for Andrew Cunanan, the prime suspect in a four-state murder spree, they "are exploring the possibility" that he may be eluding them by dressing as a woman.

Police issued the investigative update in a one-page statement Saturday night. The statement also said he "may have shaved all of his body hair to enhance this appearance."

Investigators reportedly found hair-cutting equipment and hair dye when they searched a Miami Beach hotel where Cunanan may have been living for the past two months. He has been sought since Tuesday, when Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot dead.

However, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported Saturday that Cunanan was recognized in police photos at a Sheraton hotel in Fort Lauderdale as late as Friday morning, dressed as a man.

Doctor's murder not the work of Cunanan

Cunanan, 27, is the prime suspect in the shooting of Versace and four other men in Minnesota, Illinois and New Jersey, stretching back to late April.

However, on Saturday, police cleared Cunanan as a suspect in the murder of Miami Springs doctor Silvio Alfonso, who was found strangled in his home two days after the Versace slaying.

A witness had reported seeing a man fitting Cunanan's description fleeing from Alfonso's house after the murder. But on Saturday, police said they had arrested another man for the crime.

Yosvani Hernandez, 28, was charged with first-degree murder, battery on a police officer and armed robbery.

FBI converges on Fort Lauderdale hotel

FBI agents and police converged on Fort Lauderdale Friday after a doorman at the Sheraton Yankee Clipper Hotel said a man resembling Cunanan asked for directions to an apartment.

The doorman, who identified himself only as Dan, said he called the police after the man showed him another person's driver's license and asked for help in finding the address on it. The man's thumb covered the name on the license, but the address was for the Port Royale Apartments, the doorman said.

He described the man as "normal" and "friendly," clean-shaven and well-dressed in shorts and a dark Ralph Lauren polo shirt with vertical stripes. The doorman said a co-worker agreed that the man resembled Cunanan.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, investigators confiscated video recorded by a parking lot security camera. The paper also reported that the manager of the Port Royale Apartments sent a letter to residents informing them that investigators were there, searching for Cunanan.
