MIAMI (CNN) -- The suspected serial killer who has eluded police during a cross-country killing spree was cleared Saturday in a sixth slaying, Metro-Dade police said.
The announcement came after police made an arrest in the killing of Dr. Silvio Alfonso, who was found dead in his posh Miami Springs home Thursday, about 15 miles (24 km) from the murder scene of Italian designer Gianni Versace.
"The subject arrested is not Andrew Cunanan," a police statement said, referring to the sole suspect in the Versace slaying. Cunanan also is wanted in connection with four other slayings in three states.
Yosvani Hernandez, 28, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, battery on a police officer and armed robbery.
Witnesses had said they saw a man fitting Cunanan's description running away from the doctor's home. FBI and police hunting Cunanan took away evidence from the scene, but later played down the possibility of a connection.
Cunanan likeness spotted
Police busied themselves Saturday following up prospective leads and piecing together Cunanan's possible whereabouts over the past several weeks.
FBI agents and police converged on Ft. Lauderdale after a hotel doorman said a man resembling Cunanan asked for directions to an apartment.
"We gave the man the directions," said the doorman at the Sheraton Yankee Clipper Hotel. "Then he disappeared to the north."
"The same thing happens 100 times a day here, other than the fact he did resemble one of the pictures in the police lineup," said the doorman, who identified himself only as Dan.
The doorman said he called the police after the man showed him another person's driver's license and asked for help in finding the address on it. The man's thumb covered the name on the license but the address was for the Port Royale Apartments, the doorman said.
He described the man as "normal" and "friendly," clean-shaven and well-dressed in shorts and a dark Ralph Lauren polo shirt with vertical stripes. The doorman added that a co-worker also said the man resembled Cunanan.
"He resembled the picture close enough to call the police," Dan said.
According to the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, investigators confiscated video recorded by a parking lot security camera. The paper also reported that the manager of the Port Royale Apartments sent a letter to residents informing them that investigators were there, searching for Cunanan.
