TWA Flight 800 lifted off from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport at 8:19 p.m. on July 17, 1996. By all accounts, the Paris-bound jumbo jet carrying 230 people was just another flight -- one of 300 planes that depart JFK every day -- until 12 minutes later, when it disappeared from radar.
