The airline sold the airplane back to Boeing on December 15, 1975. Boeing intended to sell the plane to the Imperial Iranian Air Force, but Iran never took possession, and the 747 was sold back to TWA on December 16, 1976.
National Transportation Safety Board sources say the aircraft had an excellent maintenance record, and was in full compliance with every maintenance directive from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.
A CNN Interactive Data Points review of the plane's accident record shows just two minor incidents, with no injuries, before the fatal crash.
- May 11, 1987: A tire disintegrated on takeoff, damaging the landing gear.
- September 23, 1988: Pilots shut down one of the jet's engines because of low oil pressure.
As of January 23, 1995, N93119 had logged 87,964 flight hours and 16,034 takeoffs and landings.
