Elephant grabs center stage -- and won't leave![]() August 9, 1997 Web posted at: 11:11 p.m. EDT (0311 GMT) LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Akile the elephant was ready for her close-up on a Hollywood sound stage. Unfortunately, she wasn't at all eager to cede the limelight once her star turn was over. The acting pachyderm, who has a role in an upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, was taken to the sound stage Friday to appear in a commercial. To get there, she had to go up a ramp.
Trouble was, when it came time for Akile to go back down the ramp, she wouldn't budge. Like many other elephants, it seems she's a bit afraid of heights. So her handlers had to back a large truck up to the stage door so Akile could make her exit without walking the plank. And 11 hours after she arrived, the 3-ton, two-tusked star was on her way home to northern California. Related stories:
