WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Lessons on giving and sharing are, for
the moment, upstaging lessons on math and reading at an
elementary school in Washington, D.C..
The students at Janney Elementary School raised more than
5,000 pounds of nonperishable food to donate to a shelter.
And those who are receiving are giving thanks.
"To me, it is vital," says Wanda Witter, homeless woman. "I'm
completely unemployed ... and I don't know how I'd eat
without it."
The shelves at the First Congregational Church in downtown
Washington will remain stocked for many weeks to come, thanks
to a relationship with the school that lasts throughout the
year.
CNN's Bruce Morton reflects on the learnings from these
Thanksgiving lessons.
