Fugitive bombing suspect Rudolph reportedly sighted
Web posted at: 1:51 p.m. EDT (1751 GMT) ANDREWS, North Carolina (CNN) -- Federal agents converged on this town in western North Carolina on Tuesday amid reports bombing suspect Eric Robert Rudolph had been seen near here recently. He is wanted for a fatal bombing in January at a Birmingham, Alabama, women's clinic. Doug Jones, the U.S. attorney in Birmingham, said the suspect was spotted in the Andrews area last weekend. Jones did not identify the person who reportedly saw Rudolph. The witness described Rudolph as having a beard and long hair in a pony tail. The person also said Rudolph had lost a lot of weight. Jones said a truck that had been stolen Sunday from nearby Nantahala, North Carolina, was recovered in Andrews on Monday. Tests conducted on the vehicle make authorities "highly confident" Rudolph had been in the truck, the prosecutor said. It was not immediately known whether Rudolph was on foot or in a vehicle when the sighting occurred. The time of the sighting also was not clear.
The January 29 bombing of the New Woman All Women clinic, where abortions are performed, killed a police officer moonlighting as a security guard and severely injured a nurse. Rudolph, 31, is a carpenter whose last known address was a trailer in Murphy, North Carolina, about 15 miles southwest of Andrews. Since being named a suspect in the clinic bombing, Rudolph has evaded a nationwide search. A $1 million reward has been offered for information leading to his arrest. Rudolph also is wanted for questioning in connection with the fatal bombing at the Atlanta Olympics in July 1996, the February 1997 bombing of an Atlanta gay bar, and explosions outside an Atlanta abortion clinic.
