BUFFALO, New York (CNN) -- The FBI said Wednesday it is seeking a Vermont man as a material witness in the shooting death of Dr. Barnett Slepian, a gynecologist who provided abortions in the Buffalo area.

Slepian was shot to death in Amherst, New York, through his kitchen window on October 23.

The FBI said it is seeking James Charles Kopp, 44, and that a 1987 black Chevrolet Cavalier, bearing a Vermont license plate and registered to Kopp, was seen in the Amherst area in the weeks preceding Slepian's murder.

Kopp is not considered a suspect at this time, and is only being sought for information he may be able to provide in the case, officials emphasized.

Sources told CNN that Kopp was last seen jogging through Slepian's Amherst neighborhood the day of the shooting.

Kopp's last known address is St. Albans, Vermont.

Correspondent Susan Candiotti contributed to this report.
