Columbine song reaffirms life and hope
April 28, 1999
LITTLETON, Colorado (CNN) -- Brothers Stephen and Jonathan Cohen, both students at Columbine High School, are using their musical talent to try to restore hope to a community devastated by last week's massacre at the school. "Friend of Mine (Columbine)," a song they performed at a memorial service on Sunday, is a musical tribute to those who were killed and wounded and a source of comfort for others touched by the tragedy. Jonathan Cohen, a junior, was trapped in the Columbine choir room when the gunfire erupted. Stephen, a senior, was in the cafeteria where many students were shot or hit by shrapnel from homemade bombs. The song, which they composed with the help of their pastor, Andy Millar, is now being sold on a CD, with proceeds going to the victims' families, the brothers said. The lyrics to "Friend of Mine (Columbine)": Columbine, flower bloom, tenderly I sing to you. Columbine, roseblood red, heartbreak overflow my head. Columbine, flower bloom. Columbine there's hope for you. Columbine, friend of mine. To your gain, on the mark. With your love, love again. Comfort peace and sweet release come from you. Where, it's true, I hide myself in you. Can you still hear raging guns ending dreams of precious ones. In God's son, hope will come, his red stain will take our pain. Columbine, friend of mine. Peace will come to you in time. Columbine, friend of mine. Turn a page, to your gain. Keep your heart on the mark. Comfort us with your love. Love again. Christ of grace attend this place, we look to you. Honor you. Fix you in our view. Columbine, flower bloom. Tenderly I sing to you. Columbine, roseblood red, heartbreak overflows my head. Columbine, friend of mine. Peace will come to you in time. Columbine, friend of mine. CNN INDEPTH SPECIAL: Are schools safe?
