U.S. murder rate down, teen suicides up

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The murder rate dropped in the United States last year, and homicide is no longer one of the top 10 causes of death.

But homicide is still the second leading killer of young Americans, aged 15 to 24, and the third leading cause of death for children age 5 to 14. Teenage suicides were also on the rise, according to preliminary 1994 data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The homicide rate dropped eight percent, from 10.5 deaths per 100,000 in 1993 to 9.7 in 1994, which made it the 11th leading cause of death. here were 23,730 homicides last year, compared to 25,470 the year before.

More MIAs from Vietnam identified

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon has identified the remains of 11 U.S. Air Force personnel killed in the Vietnam War, and said they will be returned home for burial. They include eight crew members of a C-130A that was shot down over Laos on Nov. 24, 1969.

The remains of the 11 men are to be returned from Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, to Travis Air Force Base, Calif., on Wednesday.

Wives of senator, ex-senator mugged at gunpoint

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The wife of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and the wife of former Colorado Sen. Tim Wirth were robbed at gunpoint Saturday night. Neither woman was hurt. Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz, surrendered her purse. She is the widow of former Pennsylvania Senator John Heinz. She and Wren Wirth were accosted by a lone gunman as they walked to a car after leaving a theater in downtown Washington.

Cyber-space meets outer space

aboard Columbia

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Florida (CNN) -- Astronauts on space shuttle Columbia can now engage in computer chat, but so far the talking has been all business. During their 16-day science mission, the crew is linked with ground controllers through a computer hook-up that provides nearly simultaneous two-way communications. The set-up connects the shuttle's existing communications system to an on-board laptop computer. Astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, who used the system overnight to work on a simulated problem, called it "pretty slick."

One of Sunday's experiments involved moving huge water drops with sound waves (442K QuickTime movie). Each drop was about an inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, compared to normal water droplets on Earth that are about one-eighth that size. Each drop contained small bits of plastic so that scientists could tell which way the drop was spinning. The experiment could lead to better understanding of rainfall and weather patterns, NASA scientists said.

October snow in Colorado

snow in Denver

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Weekend snow that delayed flights at Denver International Airport and closed highways in northern Colorado moved east Monday. Interstate 70 in the Colorado mountains and foothills between Denver and Limon was closed in places because of snow and wind gusting to near 60 mph. Greeley, north of Denver, got at least eight inches of snow, while nearly two feet fell in South Dakota's Black Hills region.

On Monday the storm blew into the western Plains states. Wind gust over 50 mph piled up drifts, closing roads and some schools from Colorado into South Dakota. Snow was possible Monday from Kansas north to Minnesota.

Studies: Antacids may mask internal bleeding

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- Patients who take anti-arthritis drugs combined with antacids may be increasing their risk of serious internal bleeding, according to new medical studies being presented Monday at the American College of Rheumatology convention.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been prescribed to millions of people, chiefly to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Some of them also use antacids or anti-bleeding drugs called H2-blockers to protect users' stomachs. But researchers said antacids may mask symptoms of internal bleeding, preventing arthritis patients from getting treatment until the condition worsens.
