Police: Suspects in slayings removed live baby from womb

ADDISON, Illinois (CNN) -- Police charged three people Sunday with killing a pregnant woman and two of her children, and cutting open the woman's womb to remove her full-term infant son.

The infant child, named Elijah by relatives, was found alive with one of the suspects Friday. He is reportedly in good condition at a hospital.

The mother, Deborah Evans, 28, and two of her children were found murdered. A third child, 17-month-old Jordan, was found unharmed in a bedroom of the woman's apartment.

The body of 10-year-old Samantha was found in the apartment with Ms. Evans, and the body of 8-year-old Joshua was found by police about 12 hours later in an alley in Maywood, about 10 miles to the east of Addison. Ms. Evans' boyfriend, James Edwards, found the bodies when he returned home from work on the night shift, police said.

The three suspects are the children's father, Levern Ward; his cousin and the cousin's boyfriend.

Police said the killings did not appear to be connected to drugs or devil worship.

FAA eases airport restrictions

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Holiday travelers will soon begin to see some changes in security procedures at U.S. airports. The Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday ordered an adjustment in parking restrictions it placed on airports in recent months in response to fears of terrorism.

FAA spokesman Dick Meyer in Seattle said the agency has determined that the "level of threat" is such that security measures can be reduced. He said airports will be allowed to make their own modifications to the restrictions. Some may choose to eliminate them altogether.

The restrictions included closing parking meters in front of terminals, not allowing drivers to leave their cars unattended for even brief periods of time, and even the elimination of handicapped parking. Those provisions can now be lifted.

Photo identification will still be required for passenger check-in, and other behind-the-scenes precautions will still be in effect. Meyer said the airport parking changes will be a break for holiday travelers, but that wasn't a factor in the decision to lower security requirements. The decision was based strictly on the "level of threat," he said.

Pennsylvania man a suspect in Unabomber investigation

unabomber

SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- The FBI said a Pennsylvania native who has been a fugitive from justice for 25 years is a suspect in the Unabomber case, but not a prime target.

Leo Burt has been missing since he was implicated in a 1970 bombing at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

George Grotz, an FBI special agent in San Francisco, told CNN nothing new has surfaced that would point in Burt's direction. But he said Burt cannot be ruled out as a suspect until he can be located and questioned.

A recent story in the Portland Oregonian compared an article written by Burt in 1972 to the recently published Unabomber manifesto. The reporter said he was convinced Burt was the Unabomber because the last paragraph of Burt's article was virtually the same in content as the manifesto's last paragraph. Grotz would not comment, saying only that there has been no uniformity or consistency in analyses of the manifesto.

The Unabomber is accused of using mail bombs to kill three people and injure 23 others since 1978.

Atlantis prepares for Monday's scheduled landing

shuttle CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (CNN) -- Flight controllers told the crew of space shuttle Atlantis on Sunday that the weather should be favorable for a landing Monday at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Atlantis is scheduled to end an eight-day voyage at 12:34 p.m. EST (1734 GMT) Monday.

The five-member crew spent Sunday stowing equipment and checking shuttle systems in preparation for the landing.

Early in the day, flight controllers got an unusual view of Atlantis using a camera located on the shuttle's robot arm. All five members of the shuttle's crew were visible as they peered from two windows located in the spacecraft's upper flight deck.

NASA has called the mission's successful docking with the Russian space station Mir "a confidence-builder." The astronauts delivered a new 15-foot shuttle docking tunnel to Russia's Mir outpost and spent three days working with three space station cosmonauts.

Striking workers publish newspaper

strike

DETROIT (CNN) -- Striking workers of the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press have come out with their own newspaper. The Detroit Sunday Journal debuted this weekend with local and state news, classified ads and a crossword puzzle -- all for 60 cents.

A short story said the 48-page weekly paper will be published for "the duration of the current labor dispute." The six striking unions hope the tabloid will pressure the daily newspapers to settle the five-month-old strike.

The News and Free Press have continued to publish a combined daily edition using replacement workers and employees who have crossed picket lines. The Free Press and the strikers also have been publishing Internet versions of their newspapers.
