Race became a focus of the trial. People were asked if the trial affected the jury system and if it should be substantially changed. A 58% to 38% majority opposed changes to the system.
People were also asked if race had any effect upon the jury. The question was worded, "Thinking now about the influence of racial issues on the jury, which of the following do you agree with most:"
How race would affect the verdict was also asked in a poll taken September 29-30. The question was asked Tuesday as well. Before the verdict, 29% felt that racial issues were the determining factor. After the verdict was read, that figure had risen to 34%.
