LeRoy Schweitzer, 57, and Daniel E. Petersen Jr., 53, were arrested without incident and charged in connection with fraudulent check and money order schemes. They had been indicted by a federal grand jury on May 19, 1995.

FBI teams staked out the Freemen ranch.



Schweitzer and Petersen appeared in Federal Court, refusing to allow an indictment to be read.

FBI agents were joined by U.S. marshals and deputies, who set up camp outside the ranch.

Two "Freemen" leaders were arraigned in Montana while FBI agents pleaded with other members of the anti-government group to surrender.

Petersen and Schweitzer were ordered held without bail. Residents living near the ranch began circulating a petition asking the Freemen to avoid a violent confrontation with the 100 law enforcement agents stationed outside.

Richard Clark, one of 10 fugitive members of the Freemen group in Montana wanted on conspiracy and fraud charges, turned himself in to federal authorities.

Meanwhile, Schweitzer ended a six-day hunger strike and was transported to a hospital.
