Pope to enter hospital Sunday for appendix removal
VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II, who has been
suffering from a series of health
problems, will enter the hospital Sunday to have his appendix
removed, the Vatican said. A one-line statement Friday said
the 76-year-old Polish pope would have the operation at
Rome's Gemelli hospital but it not say when the surgery would
take place. Sources said it would most likely be Tuesday.
Thursday night the Vatican denied an Italian news agency
report that the pope might be suffering from a new tumor. The
Pope had a colon tumor removed in a 1992 operation.

War crimes trial of Croat general set for January
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (CNN) -- The trial of the highest-
ranking suspect in custody of the Yugoslav war crimes
tribunal will start January 8, the court announced Friday.
Croat Gen. Tihomir Blaskic is charged with crimes against
humanity. His indictment alleges he commanded Bosnian Croat
troops who went on a rampage through central Bosnia in 1992
and 1993 killing hundreds of people, mainly Muslims.
Blaskic defiantly turned himself over to the U.N. court April
1, declaring he would prove his innocence. The U.N. tribunal
has indicted 74 suspects but has just seven in custody.
