Sri Lankan forces say key rebel naval base smashed
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- Sri Lankan government forces said
Monday they destroyed a separatist naval base belonging to
the Tamil Tigers, killing or wounding as many as 40 rebels.
The military launched a four-hour assault on the
Poonaithoduwai Sea Tiger base Sunday, and withdrew when the
base was destroyed, officials said. The Sea Tigers have been
plaguing military convoys ferrying troops and supplies to the
battle areas in the north.
The rebels want an independent homeland for the mainly Hindu
Tamils in the north and east of Sri Lanka.
