COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- Thirteen years of ethnic conflict
in Sri Lanka have left more than one million children dead,
injured or displaced, the Britain-based Save the Children
organization said Tuesday. Nearly a quarter million of them
are under age 5.
The findings were published in a report to the United Nations
earlier this month after two years of research by Graca
Michel, the U.N. secretary-general's expert on the subject.
The report said that over 2 million children have been killed
in armed conflicts all over the world in the past 10 years.
In Sri Lanka, Tamil Tiger rebels are battling the majority
Sinhalese government for an independent homeland.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
