COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- A member of parliament from Sri Lanka's ruling People's Alliance was shot Tuesday and died in the hospital, police said.

Lawmaker Nalanda Ellawala, 29, and a security guard of another legislator traveling with him died, and five people were wounded in a confrontation on a road in Kuruwita, 50 miles south of the capital, Colombo.

Ellawala's political group and a rival group from the main opposition United National Party (UNP) had stopped on the road.

Police said Ellawala got out of the car when UNP activists blocked his motorcade. An argument followed, his security guards fired warning shots, then someone shot at Ellawala and people standing nearby.

Police said they had made no arrests, adding it was not clear who fired the shots that hit Ellawala.

Reuters contributed to this report.
