SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- South Korean President Kim Young-sam has denied knowledge of, or involvement in, a slush fund involving his predecessor, Roh Tae-woo.

Roh has confessed to amassing a $654 million political slush fund while in office from 1988-1993 and to keeping $222 million after he left office.

Opposition leader Kim Dae-jung has acknowledged he accepted $2.6 million from Roh to finance his 1992 presidential campaign and alleged Kim Young-sam took huge amounts of cash.

Paper says assassination planned far in advance

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- The assassination of Islamic Jihad leader Fathi Shakaki was planned months in advance, allowing those responsible to escape by sea, Israeli newspapers reported Monday. A gunman shot the militant Palestinian group's leader last Thursday outside a hotel on the Mediterranean island of Malta. A motorcycle used in the escape later was found near a harbor.

Israel remains on alert for promised Islamic Jihad revenge. At checkpoints leading into the country, troops denied entry to all Palestinians under the age of 35, even those with valid work permits. An Islamic Jihad official Monday accused the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency of aiding Israeli agents in carrying out the killing. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement. Also Monday, hundreds of sympathizers of the Islamic Jihad cried "death to America" and "death to Israel" at a demonstration in Shakaki's home town of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.

Philippines death count rises from storm

BACOLOD, Philippines (CNN) -- Rescuers looked for more bodies Monday after Tropical Storm Zack killed at least 126 people and wrecked thousands of homes in the central Philippines, officials said. Radio reports said many families remained stranded on rooftops in low-lying areas in Iloilo province and helicopters ferrying relief goods could not land because floods had turned the local airport into a waterway.

Provincial officials said Negros Occidental was the worst-hit of eight provinces battered by Zack's 65 mph (105 kph) winds. More than 60,000 people abandoned their homes at the height of the floods and fled to evacuation centers. Thousands of acres of cropland were damaged. Initial loss estimates stood at $2 million. The region accounts for 70 percent of the country's production of sugar, a major export.

Grounded oil tanker refloated off Wales

LONDON (CNN) -- Tugboats refloated a grounded Norwegian tanker off south Wales on Monday and the Coast Guard said no oil had been spilled. The Borga was carrying more than 112,000 tons of crude oil when it ran aground on the way to the Milford Haven refinery on Sunday morning. There was a hole in at least one ballast tank but the hulls were not affected, officials said.

Some 8,500 tons of oil were pumped into other vessels while the Borga was aground. No oil was spilled and refinery operations were not affected, the Coast Guard said.
