U.S. Embassy in Uganda closes because of security threat

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Embassy in the Ugandan capital of Kampala has been closed since Monday because it has received new information of "the possibility of an attack of some sort against a U.S. facility," U.S. officials have told CNN.

Since the August 7 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the U.S. Embassy in Kampala has been closed two or three times because of security concerns, said one official.

U.S. officials are reluctant to spell out exactly what those concerns are, but one official told CNN, "it's not a stretch to think Kampala would be affected by similar circumstances" as Tanzania and Kenya.

The attacks on U.S. embassies there killed more than 250 people including 12 Americans.

Uganda is the closest African neighbor to Tanzania and Kenya with a U.S. Embassy and they are "very similar types of countries with similar types of populations," the official told CNN.

Threats were also made against the Danish and British embassies in Uganda.

There are approximately 30,000 threats made against U.S. facilities every year. The U.S. Embassy in Kampala could re-open in a few days.
