AFRICAN JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR COMPETITION
in partnership with

FREE PRESS-AFRICA AWARD
One of the categories, The Free Press-Africa Award, sponsored by The Freedom Forum, recognises journalistic work that demonstrates courage and integrity and enhances the cause of media freedom throughout the Continent. It promotes press freedom and encourages journalists in performing the vital service of providing news and information to their communities.
As with the other categories in the Competition, the Free Press-Africa award is meant to reward excellence. It is also meant to support journalists who produce fine work at continuing risk to their safety by covering conflicts, corruption or crises in an atmosphere where information is controlled or suppressed. In so doing, these journalists are waging a crucial struggle for press freedom. The award recognizes that many journalists across Africa wage this struggle and continue to work under dangerous and stressful conditions.
Journalists covering such stories are not always in a position to enter their work in competitions so this entry form also encourages editors, colleagues and family members to enter work on their behalf.
All entries must have been published or broadcast in 2002 and proof supplied. Entries submitted for last year's Competition will not be considered. THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ENTRIES IS February 21st 2003.
The Free Press-Africa Award (Prix Liberté de la Presse - Afrique) est ravi d'inclure la participation des journalistes africains francophones.
Judging will take place in April 2003. The judges decision is final and binding. Submitted material cannot be returned. The finalists will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony and a complementary finalists programme in Johannesburg, South Africa in June 2003, subject to necessary immigration requirements.
