Being a winner - by John-Allan Namu

John Allan Namu Ted Turner

Winning the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award has been, I believe, for all the past winners, something that has changed them not only as professionals but individually as well. My experience stays very true to this.

The award instantly catapulted me into a category of journalists that few in Kenya say they belong to. More importantly, it marked a key point in the life of a young man; that moment confirmed to me that dreams really do come true (pardon the cliche!)

Winning gave me the opportunity to visit CNN Centre in Atlanta, and for three weeks, I experienced more growth as a journalist than I ever had; being exposed to an environment where excellence is second nature. The best part of the fellowship though, was meeting 12 other journalists from around the world. Sharing your experiences in the field, learning about each others cultures and challenging each other over the three weeks, I learnt that no matter where in the world you come from, the passion shared by journalists is universal. Being part of this unique experience has helped me set the bar very high for myself. I will be going further both as a journalist and as an individual, and will always remember how being a CNN MultiChoice African Journalist winner helped me start on this path.
