Hundreds killed as flood dikes collapse in China
Other flood areas:August 4, 1998Web posted at: 11:07 a.m. EDT (1507 GMT) (CNN) -- China's worst flooding in decades claimed hundreds of new victims when the Yangtze River broke a dike in central Hubei province, washing away a company of soldiers sent to shore up the levee, officials said on Tuesday. "About 200 people -- including soldiers, farmers, laborers and local leaders -- were working to protect the dike when it collapsed," said a local official in Hubei's Jiayu county. The dike broke on Saturday, but the Hubei provincial government imposed a news blackout on flood reports from the county, which is home to more than half a million people, a second local official said.
The Flood Information Center said floodwaters had receded in the 37 affected administrative districts, but may rise again in northern and northwestern areas due to heavy rains. Major rivers were still above danger levels. The meteorological department said the monsoon was again active, with 170 millimeters (6.8 inches) of rain recorded in northern Dinajpur district on Monday. The official toll from a month of flooding was 256, but the outbreak of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, claimed three more lives. A senior government doctor has warned of a rise in the number of people falling ill from intestinal diseases due to a shortage of drinking water. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
