Moon over Queensland: Runners bare all for fund-raiserNovember 23, 1998Web posted at: 5:17 p.m. EST (2217 GMT) WEIPA, Australia (CNN) -- It's not exactly what Ernest Hemingway had in mind when he wrote about the "Running of the Bulls." In this small town in north Queensland, the phrase refers to a crowd of naked men streaking down the road to raise money for charity. The annual race benefits the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which provides medical care by air around the Australian Outback. George Blake and Nigel Gould staged the race, which is run every year, just after summer monsoons begin. The sunset run attracts a good deal of bawdy humor and a number of female spectators. "A lot of people set up spotlights on the road so they get a good view," Blake said. The 196 bare runners raised about $1,300 for the cause, collecting donations from spectators along the route. At least two runners made sure everyone knew where the money would go by painting the air service's initials on their buttocks. Some runners brought along their pets. Some bent the dress code slightly, wearing in-line skates. Gould said they were hoping to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records -- for the most naked men to do a live radio interview from a phone booth.
