Tiananmen not all of modern-day China's legacy

A decade later, the Chinese army's bloody suppression of pro-democracy demonstrators who had gathered in Tiananmen Square in 1989 remains a watershed event.

Among many Chinese citizens, the brutality of the crackdown shattered the legitimacy of an already discredited Communist Party. The grievances that sparked the student protests ten years ago -- unemployment, corruption, a lack of political freedom -- are still among the most contentious issues in China today. Analysis by CNN's Mike Chinoy
