Description
of electoral structure:
The president
is directly elected by popular vote to a four-year term.
Members of the
Senate are elected via majority voted in staggered elections. In 1994
two-thirds of the Senate (54 seats) was up for election; in 1998 one-third
of the Senate (27 seats) was up for election. Members serve eight-year
terms.
All members of
the Chamber of Deputies are elected for a four-year term via a party-list
proportional system.
