has a bicameral legislature consisting of a House of Representatives
or DPR (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat) which consists of 550 seats and
a Regional Representative Council or DPD (Dewan Pewakilan Daerah)
which consists of 128 seats.

Description
of electoral system:
- Under new legislation, the president is elected by direct popular
vote to serve a five year term.
- Members of the DPR are elected via an open list proportional representation
system while the DPD candidates are elected using a Single Non Transferable
Vote (SNTV). In this system, voters in each precinct will
vote for one candidate only, with each province required to elect
four representatives
to the DPD.

When was the last election?
- This is the first
direct presidential election in Indonesia. The last presidential
elections
took place on October 20, 1999. In this
election, the the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR)
elected Abdurrahman WAHID of the National Awakening Party (PKB)
as president. But on July 23, 2001 former Vice President MEGAWATI Sukarnoputri
was
appointed president due to concerns regarding President WAHID’s
health.

Is there anything unique about this upcoming election that would be of interest to an international audience?
- This was the
first time voters are able to directly elect a president into
office. Previously,
presidents were elected into office
by the People’s Consultative Assembly (Majelis Permusyawarahan
Rakyat or MPR).
- Major issues that
surrounded the elections included employment, the economy, government
corruption, education, territorial integrity of Indonesia,
and security. Other concerns included the need to attract more foreign
investments into the country which many analysts viewed as key for
Indonesia’s
economic recovery.
