Is
there anything unique about this upcoming election that would be of interest
to an international audience?
Financial mismanagement, corruption and loss of earnings from mining
and fertilizer industries were the main concerns surrounding the
elections.
Upon election, parliamentary members were slated to elect a new
president on May 6 after president Bernard DOWIYOGO died in office
on March 10,
2003. A parliamentary deadlock is currently in effect as members
try to nominate and elect a new successor to acting president
Derog GIOURA.
