Description
of electoral structure:
- The president
is elected by popular vote for a six-year term.

all members are elected by simple majority vote in a nationwide constituency.
One half of the Senate is elected every three years. All members serve
six-year terms.
- In the House of
Representatives, 208 members are elected by simple majority vote in
single-member constituencies and 14 members are elected by a system
of proportional representation in a nationwide constituency. All members
serve three-year terms.

- Former President
Joseph ESTRADA was impeached by the House of Representatives on November
13, 2000 on corruption charges.
- In January 2001,
the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court declared that the office of president
was vacant and forced ESTRADA from office. Vice-President Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO
was sworn in as president on January 20, 2001.
- The Supreme Court
of the Philippines recently rejected an appeal by former President ESTRADA
against the legitimacy of Gloria ARROYO'S presidency. The unanimous
court ruling denies ESTRADA immunity from criminal charges and allowed
for his arrest.
