Description
of electoral system:
- The president
is elected by popular vote for a four-year term.
- The Assembly of
Experts appoints the leader of the Islamic Revolution.
- Members of the
Islamic Consultative Assembly are elected by majority vote in two rounds.
A candidate must win at least one third of the votes cast to be elected
in the first round, and a simple majority in the second round. All members
serve four-year terms.
- The Islamic Consultative
Assembly elects six members to the Council of Guardians and an additional
six are appointed by the president. The Council of Guardians is responsible
for assuring that legislation passed is compatible with Islam. They
also supervise elections for the Assembly of Experts, the president
and the parliament.

Of Interest:
- President KHATAMI
announced his candidacy on May 4, 2001, two days before the registration
deadline. Prior to his registration, 220 of the 290 members of parliament
signed a letter asking him to run.
- KHATAMI received
over 70% of the vote in the 1997 elections, and is widely favored to
win this election, according to news sources.
- The Council of
Guardians must approve the eligibility of all candidates. Of the 814
applications received, the Council approved ten, including the incumbent
president. Among those rejected were all 45 applications from women.
