MOSCOW (CNN) -- Russian police have detained three men in connection with a shooting Sunday at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, NTV and Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Police did not confirm that any suspects were in custody.

A State Department official confirmed there was an "incident" at the U.S. Embassy in Russia Sunday but could not comment further, adding, "at this time we are gathering information and investigating."

There were no injuries, the official said.

Film shown on NTV television showed a man stepping out of a white jeep with a grenade launcher. After trying to fire the weapon at the embassy and failing, the man threw it to the ground. A policeman opened fire, and someone inside the vehicle answered with automatic rifle fire.

Bullets pierced the outside of the U.S. Embassy

Two grenade launchers were found outside the building. Police covered them with bullet-proof jackets.

Police chased the jeep on foot after the shooting, but it escaped.

According to wire reports, the jeep was a police vehicle that had been hijacked by three men earlier. Interfax said the vehicle was later found abandoned.

Hundreds of demonstrators have gathered at the U.S. Embassy for the past four days, protesting NATO's bombing campaign in Yugoslavia. The protesters, mostly skinheads and gang members, have hurled bottles and rocks at the building. Police have made numerous arrests.
