WASHINGTON (CNN) -- NATO has launched a search-and-rescue mission to find three U.S. army soldiers who disappeared while patrolling the Yugoslavian-Macedonian border, U.S. administration sources said Wednesday.

The sources said the three-man reconnaissance team had been driving along a civilian road near the Macedonian border town of Kumanovo. The soldiers radioed their base, saying they were surrounded and coming under small-arms fire. Then contact was lost.

U.S. officials said ground and helicopter crews were searching for the missing troops, who were part of a NATO monitoring mission in Macedonia.
