Pentagon: Greece OKs landing of future peacekeeping U.S. Marines
June 7, 1999

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon said Monday Greece has given assurances that more than 2,200 U.S. Marines bound for Macedonia as potential Kosovo peacekeepers will be allowed "to land soon and move through Greece to their posts."
Greece earlier refused permission for the landing of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit as its ships waited in the Aegean Sea near Thessalonica.
"A spokesman for the Greek government said that they would be allowed to off-load and transit through Greece soon," Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon said.
"He anticipated that they would be able to land soon and move through Greece to their posts," Bacon added.
Bacon did not specify when the Marines would be allowed in port, only
saying "we don't believe that there'll be any problem with meeting the time
lines."
Although Greece is a NATO member, it has not participated in the air campaign -- and at times has criticized the bombing raids, sympathizing with Orthodox Serbs.
