WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Marines manning a checkpoint in Kosovo came under fire by a group of armed men and returned fire Wednesday, killing at least three of their attackers, the Pentagon said.

No Marines were injured in the shootout, U.S. Brig. Gen. John Craddock told reporters in Washington via a telephone link from Kosovo.

Five or six other gunmen were said to be holed up in a nearby building surrounded by Marines and helicopter gunships.

It is unclear whether the attackers were Serbs, Kosovar Albanians or others. Craddock said that he did not know whether the men were in uniform.

The incident began at the checkpoint south of the Kosovo town of Gnjilane about 6 p.m. local time (noon EDT) and was ongoing, Craddock said.
