  • In Tucson, Arizona a medal ceremony is planned for a former World War II prisoner of war who was never publicly acknowledged.

  • Denver Zoo's $14 million Primate Panorama opens today. It will house 200 animals on seven acres.

  • The 61-nation Conference on Disarmament is meeting to consider a draft treaty for a global ban on nuclear weapons tests in Geneva. Chinese negotiators have said that China will observe a moratorium on testing, starting today.

  • Wednesday, July 31, is the deadline for U.S. and Japanese negotiators to reach agreement on semiconductor and insurance issues.

  • On Thursday, August 1, Secretary of State Warren Christopher will testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on U.S. international policy.

  • On Saturday, August 3, Bob Bell, who played Bozo the Clown on WGN-TV from 1959-1984, will be inducted into the clown hall of fame.

  • In 1619, the first representative assembly in America convened in Jamestown, Virgina.

  • In 1729, the city of Baltimore was founded.

  • In 1844, the New York Yacht Club was founded.

  • In 1864, during the Civil War, Union forces tried to take Petersburg, Va., by exploding a mine under Confederate defense lines. The attack failed.

  • In 1889, Vladimir Zworykin, often called the "Father of Television" for inventing the iconoscope, was born in Russia.

  • In 1965, President Johnson signed into law the Medicare bill, which went into effect the following year.

  • In 1975, former Teamsters union president Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in suburban Detroit. Although presumed dead, his remains have never been found.

  • In 1975, representatives of 35 countries convened in Finland for a conference on security and human rights that resulted in the Helsinki accords.

  • In 1995, Russia and Chechen rebels signed an agreement calling for a gradual withdrawal of Russian troops and the disarmament of rebel fighters.

    Many people around the world have now heard of Atlanta's Olympic Centennial Park after a bomb exploded there last weekend killing one and injuring more than 100. The 21-acre downtown park will reopen Tuesday morning and once again will be the center-point for Olympic visitors.
