  • The 23rd Annual People's Choice Awards for the public's favorite actors, actresses, television shows, singers and feature films will be held in Santa Monica, California.

  • Pope John Paul celebrates Mass in the Sistine Chapel to mark the feast of the Baptism of the Lord in which he will administer the sacrament of baptism.

  • The space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to be launched on a 10-day mission. Astronaut John Blaha is expected to be picked up from the Russian space station Mir and replaced by astronaut Jerry Linenger.

  • The AFC and NFC conference championships are scheduled to be played with the Carolina Panthers taking on the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the Jacksonville Jaguars will play the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
