  • The verdict is expected in a Bonn court on whether 21 Jewish former slave laborers should get compensation for their unpaid work in Nazi forced labor camps during WWII.

  • In 1885, C.D. Wright was appointed as the first Commissioner of Labor in the United States.

  • In 1930, Lt. Ralph S. Barnaby of the U.S. Navy became the first glider pilot to have his craft released from a large blimp at Lakehurst, New Jersey.

  • In 1940, the first Social Security check was issued, by the U.S. Government on this day, to Ida Fuller of Brattlesboro, Vermont. Her check number was 00-000-001 and was for $22.54.

  • In 1950, Paul Pettit signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates setting a record for baseball bonuses by collecting nearly $100,000 in bonuses and guarantees.

  • In 1958, the first U.S. earth satellite, Explorer I, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
