In 1241, Mongol horsemen under Batu Khan, grandson of Genghis
Khan, defeated the Teutonic Knights at Liegnitz, Silesia.
In 1454, the Italian states of Milan, Florence and Venice
signed the Peace of Lodi, recognizing each other's status.
In 1683, Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, claimed a large
area of the American interior for France, naming it
Louisiana.
In 1865, the U.S. civil war ended when Confederate General
Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant
at Appomattox.
In 1869, the Hudson's Bay Company agreed to cede its
territorial rights to Canada.
In 1940, Germany launched its invasion of Denmark and Norway
in World War II.
In 1942, after four months of siege, U.S. and Filipino forces
on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines surrendered to the
Japanese.
In 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German theologian and anti-Nazi
was executed in Flossenburg concentration camp. He was
