  • In 1862, the Confederate garrison of Fort Pulaski at Tybee Island, Georgia, was taken after a 30-hour siege, ending the era of masonry fortifications.

  • In 1864, Lizzie "Lillie" Bliss was born in Boston. Bliss was destined to become one of three founders in 1929 of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

  • In 1899, Percy Julian, the inventor associated with the production of synthetic progesterone, advances in the production of cortisone, a better drug for the treatment of glaucoma and a chemical foam used to fight petroleum fires, was born in Montgomery, Alabama.

  • In 1908, Jane Matilda Bolin was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. Bolin went on to become the first black woman to graduate from the Yale School of Law in 1931 and the first black female judge in the U.S.

  • In 1968, the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, one week after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • In 1970, the ill-fated Apollo 13 moon mission launched from Florida. All three astronauts returned safely to Earth after a severe malfunction caused a mission abort on the way to the moon.

  • In 1983, Harold Washington was elected the first black mayor of the city of Chicago.

  • In 1992, the prolific poet, playwright and author of over 50 books, Eve Merriam died in New York City.
