In 1307, King Edward I of England died on his way north to
subdue a rebellion in Scotland; he was succeeded by Edward II.
In 1807, the first of the Treaties of Tilsit was signed, under
which France and Russia became allies and divided Europe between
them.
In 1846, Commander J.D. Sloat of the U.S. Navy raised the American
flag in Monterey, proclaiming U.S. citizenship for California.
In 1937, following the setting up of a commission to investigate the mandate in Palestine,
the Peel Report was published in Britain. It recommended that there should be
separate Arab and Jewish states.
In 1941, President Roosevelt announced that U.S. forces had
landed in Iceland to prevent a Nazi invasion.
