Los Angeles is scheduled to play San Diego in the annual
Baseball Hall of Fame game in Cooperstown, New York.
The Queen Mother, mother of Queen Elizabeth II, celebrates
her 97th birthday.
Opening statements are expected in the trial of Ramzi Yousef,
the man prosecutors say was the mastermind of the 1993 World
Trade Center bombing in New York City.

On Tuesday, August 5, Franjo Tudjman is scheduled to be sworn
in as Croatian President for another five-year term.
On Wednesday, August 6, the Solomon Islands hold national
elections.
On Thursday, August 7, "Achievements and perspectives of the
Venezuelan Agenda," a conference, opens in Caracas.
On Friday, August 8, Prime Minister Goh Chok
Tong delivers his National Day address to the people of
Singapore.
On Saturday, August 9, the annual parade of the Apprentice
Boys in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, is scheduled to take
place. The parade celebrate the victory over Roman Catholics
who besieged the city after 13 apprentice boys shut the gates
on the advancing army of King James II.

In 1060, Henry I of France died and was succeeded by Philip

In 1265, in the Second Barons' War in England, the Royalists
under Prince Edward defeated the Barons under Simon de
Montfort at the Battle of Evesham.
In 1578, a Portuguese attempt at an invasion of Morocco was
thwarted at the Battle of Alcazarquivir. King Sebastian of
Portugal, the King of Fez and the Moorish pretender to the
throne of Fez were all killed.
In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a joint
Anglo-dutch force attacked and captured the Spanish city of
Gibraltar.
In 1789, during the French Revolution, the Constituent
Assembly abolished all feudal privileges and rights.
In 1914, Germany invaded Belgium and when London's ultimatum
to Berlin to withdraw expired at midnight, Britain declared
war on Germany. The United States declared neutrality.
In 1916, Denmark ceded the Danish West Indies, including the
Virgin Islands, to the United States for $25 million.
In 1940, Italy invaded British Somaliland and occupied some
towns in Sudan and Kenya.
In 1944, after two years hiding in an Amsterdam back room,
Anne Frank, her sister, her parents and four other Jews were
discovered by the Gestapo. The diary she kept was found after
the war, published in over 30 languages and turned into a
play and film.
In 1954, Britain's first supersonic fighter plane, the
English Electric Lightning P-1, made its maiden flight.
In 1972, Arthur Bremer was jailed for 63 years for shooting
George Wallace, governor of Alabama.
In 1972, President Idi Amin declared that Uganda was to expel
50,000 Asians with British passports to Britain within three
months.
In 1980, Hurricane Allen swept through the eastern Caribbean
for several days causing widespread damage and loss of life,
especially in St. Lucia and Haiti.
In 1981, a U.S. court ordered striking air traffic
controllers back to work and fined their union $2.4 million a
day for the duration of the strike.
In 1983, Bettino Craxi was sworn in as Italy's first
Socialist prime minister.
In 1983, a military coup in Upper Volta led by Thomas Sankara
overthrew Jean-Baptiste Ouedraogo.
In 1992, millions of blacks ended a two-day general strike
against white rule in South Africa, during which over 30
people died.
In 1993, Japan formally apologized for the first time to
women forced to serve its soldiers as sex slaves during World
War II.
In 1995, Croatia launched an offensive to regain the enclave
of Krajina, held by its Serb minority for four years.
