In 1691, the Treaty of Limerick was signed, ending the Irish
Rebellion against English rule.
In 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation
designating the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.
In 1866, Italy and Austria signed the Treaty of Vienna, ending the Seven Weeks' War.
In 1899, the border dispute between British Guiana and
Venezuela was finally settled, Venezuela gaining the area around the mouth of the Orinoco river.
In 1906, SOS was established as an international distress
signal at the Berlin Radio Conference. Coming into effect in
July 1908 it replaced CQD which was supposed to mean "all
stations - urgent."
